In the interests of downsizing a little and making best use of our money we are planning on getting rid of our two (yes two) ford explorers.

The sale of both should bring in a few Łk as both are pretty good and one is kitted with LPG.

So the question I'm putting to everyone is recommendations on a decent sized saloon/estate. It needs to be a bit of a driver's car but retain fuel economy and relatively low cost of ownership.

The explorers have been great fun and excellent workhorses - towing has been a blissful experience and even the fuel economy has been good under these circumstances, easily getting past 20mpg but the rising cost of fuel and short journeys has destroyed that with the average sinking fast (still managed to do Aylesbury and back on a single tank with fuel to spare)

Finding something to trump the explorers has got me thinking and I admit I'm struggling to find a car that I actually want to own.

So go ahead - all suggestions will be considered, tortured over and possibly rejected

For fuel and driving, Ford Mondeo 155 TDCI Estate. Quick, 48mpg, great drivers car in Zetec trim.
Or my old favourite, BMW 530D Touring. Fast, 40mpg [manual], parts cheap at Europarts, and best of all, durable, and great to drive. Oh, and chipped, bloody quick!!

If you think of LPG, then many petrol cars come into the picture. So any of the class German V6 or V8's will be excellent. And at moment, big engined cars are cheap! BMW 540i Sport is a great car to drive. Also, Audi A6 4.2 Quattro Sport. cracking car. This leads on to the Audi 'S' models like S4 and S6. They are expensive though.

Last, there is a little dark horse called the Vauxhall Vectra 3.0 CDTI. Chain driven, and chipped to 250+bhp, is a beast, with massive torque. Owners with chipped versions say, they would not swap for anything!! That says a lot.!!

Sadly I already have one, my son has one and what we need is a bigger, more faimly friendly vehicle as well...

I've been looking at the Audi range already. Have an option on a 2.4TD A4 for pretty small money but I'm not 100% convinced quite yet.

Audi A2 - bigger than you think - a real tardis for 4 adults and TDi gives 60+mpg in 1.4 format or 103mpg in 1.2 TDI (LHD) like mine with ERO road tax last 7 years due low Co2. It replaced my Mr2 Mk1 - same TQ and much better aerodynamics (0,25Cd) so not much slower!
