I had another crack at working out what is wrong with the gearbox on my son's car again today. When on the car last it made a terrible noise while drive was engaged and a strange metallic ringing noise while in neutral.
Short of fully dismantling the box I was beginning to think I would have to just find another box. I've had the diff housing off and replaced it due to a crack in the housing. I've had the cover off the end to check nothing had escaped in there, and the shifter mechanism off the top to try and locate anything (plus the opportunity to just turn it upside down and shake it out). All that came out was oil - hardly unexpected...
What I did discover is that the selector rod for reverse (I think - either that or 5th) is not staying in place properly when not selected, the result is that if you engage a gear that doesn't use that rod it allows reverse (or 5th) to almost select - the ringing noise is the gears just brushing against each other. Obviously if two lots of gears were to engage simultaneously the result would be a completely locked out gearbox with obvious consequences if the car is going along.
Having refitted the shifter box on top the selector is staying in place and, at least for now, is behaving but I am curious as to how this could happen in the first place. When you align the shifter with a rod it blocks the others from moving and keeps them properly neutral (in position) fore and aft so in theory at least there is no way the offending selector could move.
In all the FIRE based Fiats I've ever owned or driven I have never come across this happening before and I've never heard of it happening to someone else's car either. |

OK - I am now at my wits end. The gearbox is on the car, all bolted up and I finally managed to get everything fitted and wired up just now, started it up and what a surprise, 5th gear cannot be selected (nothing in the gate at all rather than crunching gears). Bizarrely reverse could be selected just fine so I have to assume that the 5th gear selection rod is fubar'd (possibly snapped).
So I guess it is time to move on and find gearbox #4 |
